Nathan Altermann (lyrics), Naomi Shemer (music), Amnon Seelig (vocal arrangement), David Hason (arrangement and production)
Yes, they were brave fellows,
True sailors every one of them!
From Tyre to the kingdom of Kush,
from Ashdod to India,
They were known in the seas of Elot, Crete and Tarshish.
They knew how to row, they knew how to drink,
and they knew how to wield a sword if needed.
With their big earrings and their red caps
people knew them everywhere.
And heading for the wide horizon they sang:
Ezion-Geber, Ezion-Geber, you Sea of Elot
We sail the sea with boats and mighty ships
But a man’s heart is wider than the sea.
Who can navigate it without a rudder?
Only a girl from Ezion-Geber, Ezion-Geber, Sea of Elot.
So they sang with sad voices
that the road to Tarshish is long,
And then, at the sound of a command
as a team they sprang into action.
When they heard the order to attack,
they stormed towards the enemy.
And the boat nearly broke apart
from their cries: Long live King Solomon, long live the navy!
And as they stormed ahead
they continued to sing:
Ezion-Geber, Ezion-Geber, Sea of Elot
May we die of the plague if we withdraw!
Today one will know who is truly a man
so that a girl from Ezion-Geber hears it too!
When they returned
the ship was loaded with treasures:
coral, gold, perfume,
ivory, monkeys and parrots.
The ship sails on, with incense, myrrh and wonders
scarred from the high seas and fiery fighting
And all know that King Solomon’s sailors
are more wonderful than gold and coral.
The wind sings, the blue bay sings
all together raise their voices:
Ezion-Geber, Ezion-Geber, you Sea of Elot
we sail the sea with large ships
But a man’s heart is wider than the sea.
Who can navigate it without an oar?
Only a girl from Ezion-Geber, Ezion-Geber, Sea of Elot.
